Thermocouple is basically an electric circuit made of two dissimilar metallic conductors welded on one extremity. For the principle known as Seebeck effect, whenever there's a difference of temperature between hot junction (welding point) and cold junction (other extremity) of conductors, an electromotive force is generated, depending on the metals type. To measure the temperature using a thermocouple, the temperature of cold junction must be already known, so that the elelctromotive force depends only on hot junction.
Type J thermocouple is made of an iron positive conductor and a negative constantan (copper-nichel alloy) conductor. Suitable to measure medium temperatures in non-oxidant atmospheres.
